Iron Mine Bay


Iron Mine Bay (48˚20'00" 123˚42'00" N side of Juan de Fuca Str, SE of Sooke, W of Victoria). Geologist George Mercer Dawson described the iron-ore deposits in this area in 1887 as being “near the coast and well situated for shipment.” Although some primitive work was done on the ore body in the 19th century (hence the name), it was not deemed commercially viable. Nearby Iron Mine Hill is also named after these abandoned dreams.
