Hornby Island


Hornby Island (49˚31'30" 124˚40'00" W side of Str of Georgia, E of Denman I). Spanish explorer José Narváez named Hornby I and Denman I the Islas de Lerena, after Spanish politician and minister Pedro Lopez de Lerena (1734–92). Hornby I received its current name from HBC officials about 1850. Rear Adm Phipps Hornby, CB (1785–1867), was cdr-in-chief on the RN’s Pacific Station, 1847–51.
