Hope Point

Hope Point (49˚26'00" 123˚22'00" SE end of Gambier I, Howe Sd, NW of Vancouver). Presumably after the RN’s Capt William Hope (b 1766), of HMS Bellerophon, who took part in the 1794 English Channel victory over French forces known as the Glorious First of June. Many place names in Howe Sd were bestowed in 1860 by Capt George Richards to honour participants in this battle. Hope eventually became an adm and a knight and changed his name through marriage to Hope-Johnstone.
