Hope Island


Hope Island (50˚55'00" 127˚54'00" W of Nigei I, off N tip of Vancouver I). Rear Adm Sir James Hope (1808–81) was cdr-in-chief of the RN’s China Station, 1859–62, during the 2nd Anglo-Chinese (or Opium) War. He led a failed attack in 1859 on Chinese defensive positions near Tianjin while trying to deliver European ambassadors to Beijing.
