Hibbard Point


Hibbard Point (52˚06'00" 128˚26'00" S end of Houghton Is, Thompson Bay, W of Bella Bella). Named in 1944 after RCN officer James Calcutt “Stumpy” Hibbard, DSC (1908–96). Hibbard was born in Que, joined the RCNVR in 1924 and became a naval cadet two years later. At the outset of WWII he was promoted to lt cdr and had charge of the RCN destroyers Skeena (1940–41) and Iroquois (1943–45). It was for his actions as a convoy escort cdr in the N Atlantic (and for helping sink a U-boat)...
