Fannin Bay


Fannin Bay (53˚12'00" 132˚03'00" S side of Maude I, Skidegate Inlet, QCI). A type of ammonite fossil, genus Fanninoceras, is found at this bay. The fossil was named after naturalist John Fannin (1837–1904), who was appointed first curator of the BC Provincial Museum in 1886. He was born at Kemptville, Ont, and in 1862 went from Manitoba to the Cariboo with the Overlanders, a group of gold seekers who made an onerous trek across the Prairies by Red River cart and packhorse.
