Evans Bay


Evans Bay (50˚11'00" 125˚04'00" E side of Read I, NE of Campbell R). Capt Sir Frederick John Owen Evans (1815–85) was hydrographer of the RN, 1874–84. Unlike his predecessor, Rear Adm George Richards, he was never on the BC coast, but he did see much action in the field. He was master and assistant surveyor with HMS Fly in the New Guinea region, 1841–46, and also served in the Acheron, which charted the NZ coast, 1848–51.
