Elephant Point


Elephant Point (49˚50'00" 124˚02'00" W entrance to Hotham Sd, Jervis Inlet). HMS Elephant, a 74-gun ship of the line, was built in Hampshire, launched in 1786 and almost destroyed by lightning in Portsmouth hbr in 1790. It was Adm Horatio Nelson’s flagship, under Capt John Foley, in the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen, where Nelson supposedly put a telescope to his blind eye to avoid seeing a signal ordering him to withdraw (see Telescope Passage).
