Coal Harbour


Coal Harbour (50˚36'00" 127˚35'00" N side of Holberg Inlet, Quatsino Sd, S of Port Hardy, NW Vancouver I). Coal was discovered at this location in the 1850s by a geologist working on the HBC’s pioneer steamship Beaver. Numerous attempts were made over the next 40 years to develop the deposits (the crew of a British warship took on coal from this site in the early 1860s), but the seams were small and inferior, and a viable industry never evolved.
