Awun Bay


Awun Bay (53 ̊40'00" 132 ̊31'00" SW side of Masset Inlet, Graham I, QCI). According to Haida leader Reynold Russ, interviewed in 1996, awun can be translated as “something precious over on the other side.” The bay was named by Lt Cdr Philip Musgrave, the regional hydrographer, in 1910. He conducted a survey of Masset Inlet that year with CGS Lillooet after the Graham Steamship, Coal & Lumber Co announced plans to open a sawmill at this site. The mill was never built.
