Ashby Point


Ashby Point (50 ̊56'00" 127 ̊55'00" N side of Hope I, off NE Vancouver I). James William Murray Ashby was a naval paymaster who rose to the rank of paymaster in chief in 1878. He was secretary to Vice Adm Sir James Hope, cdr-in-chief of the RN’s N America and W Indies stations, 1864–67. Ashby, who assisted a number of senior RN officers, was made a CB in 1867 and knighted in 1902. The point was named by Capt George Richards, the RN’s chief hydrographer, in 1864.
