Active Pass


Active Pass (48˚52'00" 123˚18'00" Between Galiano I and Mayne I, Str of Georgia). The 52-m, 678-tonne paddleboat Active, a US revenue and survey vessel under Lt Cdr James Alden, was the first naval steamer to use this passage, in 1855. The vessel, built in NY in 1849 as the Gold Hunter, was brought to San Francisco, renamed and at first carried freight between California and Oregon. The US government acquired the Active about 1853.
