Acland Islands

Acland Islands (48˚49'00" 123˚23'00" SW of Prevost I, Gulf Is). These islands were probably named after British politician, businessman and philanthropist Sir Thomas Dyke Acland (1787–1871), who was MP for Devon for many years. It is possible, however, that they commemorate Lt Edward Ackland instead, an RN officer who served on the Orestes, Thalie, Impregnable and Insolent in the early 1800s and with the Coast Guard, 1831–34. The name first appears on an 1861 Admiralty chart.
