YOUNG, William Alexander George, naval officer, administrator (b circa 1827; d 25 Apr 1885, Accra, Gold Coast). After a distinguished early career in the Royal Navy he came to VANCOUVER ISLAND in 1857 as secretary of the British boundary commission (see BOUNDARIES), surveying the 49th parallel. He established a friendship with Gov James DOUGLAS that stood him in good stead for the rest of his stay in the colony.
