VANCOUVER ISLAND, COLONY OF, existed between 1849 and 1866. It was created by Great Britain as a means of asserting its presence in the area. In return for a payment of 7 shillings, proprietorial rights were awarded to the HBC for 10 years by Charter of Grant dated 13 Jan 1849. Britain retained the right to appoint a governor while the HBC agreed to use revenue from land sales to establish colonists.
