Soward, Frederick Hubert


SOWARD, Frederick Hubert, historian (b 10 Apr 1899, Minden, Ont; d 1 Jan 1985, Vancouver). A veteran of WWI, he remained in Britain after the war to study at Oxford and Edinburgh. He joined the History Dept at UBC in 1922 and taught there to his retirement in 1966. He was department head from 1953 to 1963 and dean of graduate studies from 1961 to 1965. An advisor to the Department of External Affairs during WWII, he pioneered the academic study of international relations in Canada.
