QUIMPER, Manuel, Spanish naval officer (dates unknown). He was the first European to undertake a sustained exploration of JUAN DE FUCA STRAIT. Commanding the Princesa Real (originally the British FUR TRADING vessel Princess Royal, captured by the Spanish in 1789), he left NOOTKA SOUND at the end of May 1790, charted CLAYOQUOT SOUND and made a survey of the northern and southern shores of Juan de Fuca, visiting the harbours of today's PORT RENFREW, SOOKE and ESQUIMALT in BC and Port Discovery...
