Pritchard

PRITCHARD is at the heart of a large ranching district (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) on both sides of the S THOMPSON R, 40 km east of KAMLOOPS. The 8,500-year-old remains of a man trapped and drowned in an ancient mud flow were found in this area. Walter Pritchard, an OKANAGAN VALLEY stage driver, built a store and hotel south of the river on the CPR line in 1912, when many new settlers were arriving. A ferry crossed the Thompson R at this point until a bridge was constructed in 1920.
