PACIFIC FUR COMPANY was formed in 1809 by the wealthy New York merchant John Jacob Astor, who planned to supply the China market with furs from the Pacific Northwest. Astor took on 4 NORTH WEST CO traders as partners and hired several Canadian voyageurs to travel overland to establish a post at the mouth of the COLUMBIA R.
