OLIVER, William, missionary (b 19 Mar 1848, Bishopston, Scotland; d Feb 1937). He was trained as a ship's carpenter, and as a young man he led a dissolute life at sea. At one point, after a bout of drinking he missed his ship and was stranded in NEW WESTMINSTER; he sought help from the first church he stumbled into—Mary St Methodist—and was taken in by Rev Ebenezer Robson.
