O'Keefe, Cornelius


O'KEEFE, Cornelius, rancher (b 26 July 1838, Fallowfield, ON; d 27 May 1919, Vernon). Raised on a farm in the Ottawa Valley, he came to BC in 1862 to try his luck in the Cariboo goldfields (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO). He failed to make a strike, so he went to work shipping supplies and building roadhouses, and in 1866 he began importing cattle to supply meat to the miners. In 1867 he and two partners, Thomas Greenhow and Thomas Wood, pre-empted land at the north end of OKANAGAN LK on which to farm...
