Nuthatch


NUTHATCH is a small, plump bird with a short tail and pointed bill, easily recognized for its habit of walking head first down the trunk of a tree in search of INSECTS and seeds. The name refers to the bird's practice of breaking open hard-shelled seeds with its beak. Often nuthatches are associated with CHICKADEES and other birds in mixed-species foraging, and they are regular visitors to feeding stations in the winter.
