Nigei Island


NIGEI ISLAND, 62 sq km, is the largest of a chain of islands off the north end of VANCOUVER ISLAND in Queen Charlotte Strait just west of PORT HARDY. It was visited by the Spanish explorers Dionisio ALCALÁ-GALIANO and Cayetano VALDÉS in 1792 and originally named after Alcalá-Galiano. In 1900 the name was changed to avoid confusion with the GULF ISLAND also named for Galiano.
