Newgate

NEWGATE, formerly called Gateway, was a CROWS NEST SOUTHERN RWY station and US border post in the E KOOTENAY, 70 km southeast of CRANBROOK. The line was abandoned in 1937; much of it is now beneath KOOCANUSA LK. The settlement was rebuilt at the mouth of Linklater Crk on the west side of the lake. LOGGING and the CATTLE INDUSTRY are the economic mainstays.
