Moziño, José Mariano

MOZIÑO, José Mariano, scientist (b Sept 1757, Temascaltepec, Mexico; d May 1820, Barcelona, Spain). A member of a royal botanical expedition to New Spain, holding university degrees in theology, medicine, mathematics and botany, he was appointed as a scientist on BODEGA Y QUADRA's 1792 expedition to NOOTKA SOUND. During his summer on the coast he compiled Noticias de Nutka, an important early description of the Nootka area and its Mowachaht inhabitants (see also NUU-CHAH-NULTH). The book was...
