Merritt, William Hamilton III


MERRITT, William Hamilton III, mining engineer (b 8 June 1855, St Catharines, ON; d 26 Oct 1918, Toronto). The city of MERRITT is named after him. Grandson of W.H. Merritt, the promoter of the Welland Canal, he grew up in Ontario and studied mining engineering in England. He was impressed by the potential of the NICOLA Valley in the 1880s and in 1891 organized the Nicola, Kamloops and Similkameen Coal and Railway Co in the hopes of exploiting COAL deposits near what was then called Forksdale....
