Maynard, Max Singleton


MAYNARD, Max Singleton, artist (b 30 Dec 1903, India; d 1982, Victoria). He moved with his parents, who were missionaries, to VICTORIA in 1912. There he earned his teaching certificate and taught elementary school until 1938. At the same time he developed his skill as a painter, principally of landscapes, and became a vigorous exponent of modernism. Early influences included Emily CARR and the Group of Seven.
