Kootenae House

KOOTENAE HOUSE was a short-lived trading post established in 1807 by David THOMPSON with the help of his KTUNAXA (Kutenai) guides for the NORTH WEST CO near the present site of INVERMERE at the north end of WINDERMERE Lk. It was the first FUR TRADE post in the COLUMBIA Valley. Thompson spent 2 winters there while he traded and explored the surrounding area. The post consisted of a 3-sided log stockade backing onto a cliff above the water. Only the chimneys survive, marked by a cairn.
