KENDRICK, John, maritime fur trader (b circa 1740, Harwich, MA; d 12 Dec 1794, Hawaii). A veteran New England sea captain, he was placed in command of a trading expedition to the BC coast from Boston in 1787. He arrived in NOOTKA SOUND in Sept 1788 and wintered there, ingratiating himself with Chief MAQUINNA. The following spring he built a small base, Fort Washington, at Marvinas Bay north of YUQUOT.
