Kakawis

KAKAWIS  () , on the west side of MEARES ISLAND in CLAYOQUOT SOUND 5 km north of TOFINO, was the site of the Christie RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, which left its mark on 8,000 FIRST NATIONS children between 1900 and 1971. It burned down in the 1980s and was replaced by a drug and alcohol recovery centre. The name is a NUU-CHAH-NULTH (Nootka) word meaning "many berries."
