Hatzic Rock

HATZIC ROCK is a huge boulder near HATZIC, 2 km east of MISSION on the north side of the FRASER R. The rock is held sacred by the STO:LO Nation. Archaeologists digging in the vicinity have uncovered the oldest human dwellings in BC, dating back 5,200 years. The site, which is now Xa:ytem National Historic Site, was the main village of the Xat'suq' (Hatzic) Nation of the Sto:lo, until it was infected by SMALLPOX and abandoned. See also ARCHAEOLOGY.
