Gitwangak

GITWANGAK  () , pop 475 (2001), is a quiet GITKSAN village on the north side of the SKEENA R near the Hwy 37 turnoff about 75 km northeast of TERRACE. Until recently it was known as Kitwanga. Some outstanding TOTEM POLES here date from 1875; an ANGLICAN CHURCH with a detached bell tower was built in 1893. The name means "place of rabbits." There is a National Historic Site here called KITWANGA FORT.
