Giscome Portage


GISCOME PORTAGE is just off the HART HWY, about 40 km north of PRINCE GEORGE. It connects the FRASER R to SUMMIT LK across the height of land between the Arctic and Pacific drainages. It was used by FIRST NATIONS people, who showed it in 1863 to John Robert Giscome, a BLACK prospector from Jamaica on his way to the PEACE R. During the 1870s a wagon road was built across the portage. In 1904 Albert Huble and Edward Seebach, trappers from Ontario, opened a trading post and rebuilt the portage...
