Gillis, Duncan

GILLIS, Duncan, athlete (b 28 Dec 1882, Cape Breton, NS; d 1963, Vancouver). He was BC's first Olympic medallist and international sporting star. Gillis arrived in VANCOUVER in 1904 and found a job with the police force. He developed a reputation as an excellent athlete in various events at track (see TRACK AND FIELD) meets throughout the Pacific Northwest, once defeating Native American legend Jim Thorpe in the hammer throw.
