Fort Defiance

FORT DEFIANCE was a short-lived log fort built in the fall of 1791 by the American trader Robert GRAY in Adventure Cove, on the west side of MEARES ISLAND in CLAYOQUOT SOUND. Gray and his men remained at the site for the winter refitting their vessel, the Columbia, and building a small sloop. But before leaving in the spring the sailors attacked the nearby NUU-CHAH-NULTH (Nootka) village of Opitsat. The fort was torn down and the site was not relocated until 1966.
