DUNCAN, Charles, maritime fur trader (active 1786–92). He was in the Royal Navy prior to joining the KING GEORGE'S SOUND CO, organized in 1785 to trade for SEA OTTER pelts on the Northwest Coast. He commanded the Princess Royal in 1786 as part of the company's second expedition. In 1788, during a second summer of trading, he sailed through HECATE STRAIT and DIXON ENTRANCE, proving that the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS were not connected to the mainland.
