David, Joe

DAVID, Joe, artist (b 30 May 1946, Opitsat). Born to the Tla-o-qui-aht (Clayoquot) nation of the NUU-CHAH-NULTH, he credited his father Hyacinth David as his main teacher of cultural tradition. He was raised at Opitsat on MEARES ISLAND and in Seattle, and studied graphic design in Texas. He began to explore Northwest Coast ART in museums, attending classes at the Univ of Washington taught by the art historian Bill Holm, and he apprenticed to the carver Duane Pasco.
