Crane, Sandhill


CRANE, SANDHILL (Grus canadensis) is the only crane species present in BC. It is a tall, long-legged, long-necked wading bird with slate grey plumage and a red crown. It is distinguished from the HERON by its distinctive call and by its habit of flying with neck outstretched. Cranes mate for life, though each spring they "renew their vows" by engaging in an elaborate dance-like performance in which they bow, leap and call while tossing sticks and grass into the air with their beaks.
