Coqualeetza


COQUALEETZA, a STO:LO cultural and administrative centre in SARDIS, opened in April 1893 as a METHODIST-run RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, the Coqualeetza Industrial Institute. (The name means, roughly, "the cleansing place.") The school was in Sto:lo territory, but it had an excellent reputation and aboriginal students from all over the province attended. In 1924 the original school was replaced by a new facility, the Coqualeetza Residential School. A tuberculosis (TB) facility opened at the site in 1935...
