CHAR (Salvelinus spp) belong to the Salmonidae family of fish, which includes SALMON (Oncorhynchus spp) and TROUT (Salmo spp). Like some trout, char have both freshwater and sea-run (anadromous) varieties. They are distinguished from trout by their smaller, brighter scales and light spots on a dark background (whereas trout have dark spots on a light background).
