Baker, James A.


BAKER, James A., founder of Cranbrook (b 6 Jan 1830, London, England; d 31 July 1906, Inglewood, England). A graduate of Cambridge Univ and a retired lieutenant colonel from the British army, he immigrated to BC with his family in 1884, settling first at SKOOKUMCHUCK on the KOOTENAY R. In 1886 he bought land at Joseph's Prairie and named the site Cranbrook Farm after a town in England. He developed a ranch and a trading post and promoted railway and COAL developments in the CROWSNEST PASS area....
