BC Penitentiary

BC PENITENTIARY, the first federal penal institution west of Winnipeg, opened on 28 Sept 1878 on the north bank of the FRASER R in NEW WESTMINSTER. Additions were made to the original building over the years and the inmate population rose to 756 in the 1950s. After a decade-long series of violent disturbances, it closed on 15 Feb 1980. The remains of the original building became a heritage site. See also PRISONS.
