Willes Island

Willes Island (50˚53'00" 127˚51'00" W end of Nigei I, Bate Passage, off N end of Vancouver I). This is the island, according to BC coastal historian John Walbran, where the bodies of two of the murdered deserters from the ship England were found in 1850—a discovery that precipitated a series of RN actions against members of the Nahwitti First Nation (see Deserters Group). The origin of the name, unfortunately, is not known.
