Verbeke Reef


Verbeke Reef (48˚53'00" 125˚23'00" W end of Coaster Channel, Broken Group, Barkley Sd, W side of Vancouver I). Fr Francis R Verbeke (1860–1937), from Belgium, was a Roman Catholic missionary and teacher, at Barkley Sd in the early 1880s and afterwards at Alberni. He came first to St Leo’s, the mission to the Huu-ay-aht (Ohiaht) First Nation on Numukamis Bay, and then built a church, residence and school at Dodger Cove on Diana I in 1890.
