Transit Island


Transit Island (53˚12'00" 132˚01'00" E of Maude I, S side of Skidegate Inlet, QCI). The island is one of many BC geographical features named after surveying terms and devices. The transit, invented in 1831, is a specialized instrument, similar to a theodolite, used for measuring angles. Efficient, rugged and economical, it became the preferred tool for surveyors working in the wilds of BC.
