Torrens Island


Torrens Island (53˚15'00" 131˚59'00" NE of Image Point, Skidegate Inlet, just off Skidegate and SE Graham I, QCI). Capt Robert Williams Torrens (d 1887) was a former British Army officer who came to Victoria in 1859 and was hired as a colonial civil servant. Gov James Douglas sent him to the QCI the year he arrived, along with William Downie, to look for further evidence of gold; he later served as the clerk of Vancouver I’s colonial assembly and as a gold commissioner, justice of the peace...
