Tonquin Island


Tonquin Island (49˚07'00" 125˚55'00" W side of Templar Channel, SW of Tofino, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). The Tonquin, built in NY in 1807, was owned by John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Co and brought to the PNW in 1810–11 to establish Ft Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia R. Its capt was Jonathan Thorn, a young naval officer known for his arrogance and dictatorial behaviour (see Thorn Reef).
