Thomas Island


Thomas Island (50˚04'00" 127˚29'00" SE of the Bunsby Is, Checleset Bay, NW side of Vancouver I). Named by the hydrographic service in 1947 for Welsh sealing capt Owen Thomas (1852–1924), who went to sea aged 15 and arrived at San Francisco in 1873, joining Capt James Warren’s sealing schooner Thornton. Thomas moved to Victoria at some point and spent two seasons in the Pathfinder and two in the Favorite. In 1889, as skipper of the Black Diamond, he was apprehended by the US revenue cutter...
