Thiepval Channel


Thiepval Channel (48˚54'00" 125˚21'00" NE of Turret I, Broken Group, Barkley Sd, W side of Vancouver I). Named after HMCS Thiepval, a 324-tonne, 44-m Battle-class trawler, built at Kingston, Ont, in 1917, that struck a rock in the middle of this channel and sank in Feb 1930, under Lt Cdr Harold Tingley (see Tingley Rock). The vessel was equipped as a minesweeper in WWI and was transferred in 1920 to BC, where it served as a patrol and fisheries inspection vessel. In 1924 it was sent to Japan...
