Syren Point


Syren Point (49˚53'00" 124˚02'00" NE side of Hotham Sd, Jervis Inlet, E of Powell R). Named by the hydrographic service in 1945 after HMS Syren, in association with Hotham Sd (qv). About 1756, while still a lt, William Hotham commanded the 20-gun Syren in a spirited engagement with the larger, 26-gun French frigate Télémaque. This initiative was noted by his superiors, as were other daring actions against larger enemy vessels, and Hotham was soon promoted to capt and the command of frigates...
